K-Pop is short for Korean pop music. I started to get into K-Pop around late 2010- early 2011. My friend Kristine introduced me to this group called BIGBANG. The song was called Love Song. At first, the song title reminded me of a Justin Bieber song called Love Me.
(I will not make that mistake again LOL) However, I was proven wrong. The sound and message of the song were completely different.
At first, I was only interested in listening to the boy groups.
(the guys were handsome too ) After getting more familiar with the groups and the members of each group, I started to listen to the girl groups. Kristine introduced me to a girl group called 2ne1. BIGBANG and 2ne1 are known as the kings and queens of K-Pop.
BIGBANG debuted in 2006 and 2ne1 debuted in 2009. I was lucky that I got to attend both of their concerts before their contracts finished with YG Entertainment.
Ever since then, I developed a love for K-pop. Fast forward to seven years later, I have found other genres in the Korean music industry. I encountered genres such as
Kr&b, K-Indie, and K-Hip-hop. As I listened to more Korean pop music, I wanted to explore other types of pop music from Asia such as J-Pop, J-Rock, C-Pop,
and much more.
As of recently, I caught myself listening to more k-pop than American music sometimes Lol. The central idea of this post is not to limit to one genre of music. There were times when the K-pop songs related more to my current feelings than
American songs.
Listening to different types of music allowed me to gain another interest
as well as an appreciation to learn more about the culture. Even though I do not
understand the vocabulary of the song, I can listen to the rhythm of the song
and can tell if I will enjoy it or not.
Music can also spark an interest to learn another language. When I came back from traveling, I had the eager to learn another language. At the moment, I would like to learn Mandarin. The reason being is because of my study abroad experience for three months.
Futhermore, the other languages that I would like to learn are Japanese and Korean.
Music can also help with any emotion that one is feeling and set the mood. I am happy to have found another genre of music that I love. I recommend checking out their music; you will not regret it.
