Christmas Nostalgia

As Christmas passed, we wait for the new year. During this time, we share many traditions with family and friends. I have to say that being of a multicultural family, allows me to experience a significant number of traditions and customs. Throughout the holidays, from my Colombian side, my family prepares all kinds of dishes that only happen at Christmas. One of those traditions is tamales. Colombian tamales are made up of corn flour, garbanzo peas, green olives, red peppers, carrots, raisins, a variety of meats and plantain leaves.

Another tradition that my family does is creating the nativity set and singing carols when we are praying the novena to baby Jesus. The novena is a nine-day prayer with Christmas carols as we sing to baby Jesus. During Christmas Eve, my family and I wait until midnight to greet everyone a "Merry Christmas" and start opening presents. Then on Christmas Day, we attend Christmas Mass and watch Christmas movie after.

One of my favorite holiday traditions is going to the city with my family the day after Christmas. This past Wednesday, my family and I traveled to New York City. We went to check out the Christmas lights and decorations across the city; from Downtown to Uptown. We enjoyed the evening with laughter, smiles, good food, and reminiscing memories.

What is your favorite tradition to do with your family during the holidays?
